Accounting Blogs, We Love Them!

cpa-review-blogs

We here at Roger CPA Review comb through the best accounting blogs to bring you the creme de la creme - at least in our humble opinion* - presented here for your reading pleasure.

Like the idea? Let us know and we'll be happy to make this a regular feature as new accounting blogs show up on our radar all the time!

Keep in mind that this is by no means a comprehensive list, just a few of our favorites that we would hate to keep to ourselves. In fact, we are constantly impressed by the sheer number and volume of great accounting content coming out of the blogosphere.

Skeptical CPA
This blog's description reads: "I am a CPA in Texas with an MBA from the University of Chicago. I have seen a lot and made many mistakes. Hopefully by now I will have learned something from them. Just as importantly, you may learn something from my mistakes" but after a little regular reading, it's clear that Skeptical CPA offers much, much more. Though written by a CPA, the site focuses on a variety of issues from the Federal Reserve to regulation, law to accounting, Skeptical CPA covers everything from a no-nonsense, been-there-done-that perspective.

Update frequency: daily, if not multiple times a day

Exuberant Accountant
When we first found Exuberant Accountant on Michelle Golden's list of accounting blogs, we had to rub our eyes and make sure we were actually seeing what we thought we were seeing. A partner?! Blogging?? No way! Yes way, actually, and Scott's site is far more than just some accounting firm fluff. With a focus on leadership and the community, Exuberant Accountant looks at everything from life lessons to key areas accounting firm leaders need to keep in mind when dealing with clients and new hires alike. Bonus, his firm McKonly & Asbury LLP has also recently introduced a podcast series tackling economics in the current environment.

Update frequency: daily (weekdays)

Accounting Nation
Looking for a unique take on the accounting industry? Look no further than Accounting Nation! (Disclaimer: not always for the faint of heart) Written in a casual but authoritative tone, Accounting Nation addresses the particulars of life in public accounting as seen from the eyes of a (slightly jaded?) insider. We pretty much guarantee you will LOL at least once.

Update frequency: multiple times a day

Narrowing the GAAP
This blog is fairly new but never ceases to amaze us with the quality of content it manages to provide. According to the site, it is Your ultimate guide to getting hired by the Big 4 and thriving in it! but we like to think of it as a refreshing take on the experience of being recruited by and sealing a deal with the Big 4. Everyone knows what Meet the Firms is, but not everyone can discuss both college "relationships" AND a career in public accounting in the same useful and entertaining post. (Disclaimer: infrequent "colorful" language - weighed against the power of the tips this blog offers, it's more than worth it, even for the colorful language-adverse)

Update frequency: several times monthly

FEI Financial Reporting Blog
Love financial reporting? Then you're going to absolutely adore FEI's Financial Reporting blog. Regulatory and reporting issues in the accounting industry are far more important than they may appear to some new accounting grads; no one is saying you have to fall in love with regulation but if you want to keep up on industry changes (+ fair, balanced analysis), this is the place to be.

Update frequency: several times monthly

*Adrienne notes here that she may be speaking for herself in saying these blogs are some favorites, and invites both colleagues and CPA exam candidates alike to contribute any do-not-miss reads of their own in the comments section!

Don't miss the #s People and their blog at numberspeople.posterous.com. They talk about accounting from a business perspective, tackles tax tips every friday and make a real effort to make accounting exciting (#s People are ex-students of Roger and tries hard in achieving that same level of excitement/energy he carries in class - it's not an easy task.)
